Working Woman Wednesday. Interview With Amy Serrano, Founder Of Who Knew Us Website and Sickle Cell Warrior.

Tell readers about your morethansicklecell website and when did you start it?

Well the morethansicklecell website it’s not mine it’s another sickler site and I was featured on his website for the June 2018 Warrior of the Month.  My movement is #WhoKnew and I started WhoKnew about five years ago, because I wanted let other sicklers know that they are not alone in this battle! I know what it is like to struggle everyday in pain.  I know what it’s like to be in and out the hospital, spending countless days.  I know the aggravation of not being understood by our peers, doctors, nurses and sometimes we just need to know that it will be okay.  That some like me (another sickler) is a warrior like me.  That no matter what our body is going through, that our mind is stronger and that We GOT THIS!

What do you feel separates your website from others?

Well my website is different from others, because it’s an informative website.  It will you get information about what’s going on in the Sickle Cell community, it will be nation wide with information on different states and what’s going on with SCD.  Also my site will feature all different aspects of Sickle Cell from being an advocate to a warrior.  It will be raw, show the good the bad and the ugly with myself dealing with SCD .

What would you like the general public to know about sickle cell disease?

THAT ITS NOT, I REPEAT NOT CONTAGIOUS AND ITS NOT ONLY “Oh the thing this has or Prodigy died from”.

Do you feel Sickle Cell Anemia gets enough attention, such as other chronic illnesses?

Absolutely not! It gets none to little recognition.  People barley know what Sickle Cell is, let alone know what month it’s celebrated or the Rubin color for sickle cell anemia.  By the way June 19th is World Sickle Cell Awareness Day.  September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month and the ribbon color is burgundy.

What are the pros and cons of having sickle cell anemia?

Pros of having Sickle Cell Anemia, lol.  Yeah right.  No I can say dealing with Sickle Cell gave me the strength I never knew I had (whoknew).  Seriously I push through my limits of living life from working to traveling.

What would your dream vacation consist of if money wasn’t a factor?

Just the sun, beach or pool and great family and friends around me.

What’s your best childhood memory?

Best childhood memory, I cannot really recall one.

How has your family shaped your personality and who you turned out to be?

My family taught me no matter what family comes first.  It don’t matter if your blood related or not, because anyone who you consider family will always be there for you.

What is one thing that brings a smile to your face, no matter the time of day?

Thinking about my late mother.

What’s the title of the current chapter of your life?

At this moment I will call this chapter of my life RELAUNCH, because I’m reinventing re introducing whoknew all over again.  From the way promote it to the new levels of challenges I face in this leveling up whoknew campaign .
