Working Woman Wednesday. Interview With Black Business Boom Owner.

Known as the ”Black Groupon,” Black Business Boom, founded by Chicago native Danielle McGee, is a directory of Black-owned businesses.  Created as a vehicle to promote their business and services, while also recruiting new customers, converting them into returning customers and driving referrals.  Minority-owned businesses are being launched at a rapid pace but for many, there is no budget for marketing or they are unsure how to gain exposure for their business.  Insert Black Business Boom, an innovative approach to marketing Black-owned businesses. Through Black Business Boom, merchants offer coupons to potential customers with the hope of converting them to returning customers.

What inspired you to start Black Business Boom?

The idea to start Black Business Boom came to me after teaching a class for aspiring business owners for a local TN non-profit, Corner to Corner.  I came home one night and couldn’t shake the feeling that I needed to do something to help black business owners gain more exposure for their businesses.
As a business owner, what are your top three priorities?

My top three priorities are: 1. Keeping the people that I do business with happy by listening to them and understanding their needs.  2. Being socially responsible and being a good representative of the Black entrepreneur community.  3. Consistently evaluating my business and processes to ensure I am running an efficient and effective business.

What separates your business from everyone else?

The passion and love I have for helping Black businesses succeed.  I don’t focus on making money for myself.  I am focused on how I can drive revenue to Black owned businesses and help them grow.  I know the money will come for Black Business Boom down the road if I stay true to my passion.

What is one thing or advice you would give to new or established, but struggling entrepreneurs?

Learn how to pivot.  Things will not always go your way, but you have to evaluate your failures and pivot to have better outcomes.

What is one thing you think customers should know about your business that they may not be aware of?

It is completely free to list a coupon with Black Business Boom!

What is one thing in life that makes you feel alive?

What skill would you like to master?

I’d love to learn to code and create apps.  I would have loved to have developed our app on my own.

What was one of the best days of your life?

The day I returned from a two week solo trip to Asia.  I had an amazing trip, but a very close friend of mine died while I was gone.  I was very happy to be back on US soil with my family and friends.

What is something you think everyone should do at least once in their lives?

Travel solo to another country.  You learn a lot about yourself when you are out of your comfort zone and don’t have anyone to depend on.

What’s the best thing about your life right now?

My support system.  Those that are close to me are huge supporters of my business, but I also have supporters that I have never met.  It’s amazing how people have rallied behind me and my business and it truly keeps me going.

How can everyone keep in contact with you on social media?
