Rookie Quarterback Baker Mayfield led the Cleveland Browns to a 21-17 victory over the New York Jets. Mayfield entered the game late second quarter after starter Tyrod Taylor left the game with a concussion. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft completed 3 out of 4 of his first passes to show the Browns why he deserved to be the number one overall pick. The Browns kicked a field goal on Mayfield first possession and trailed 14-3 at halftime.
Browns Kicker Greg Joseph kicked another field goal and Browns Running Back Carlos Hyde ran for a touchdown in the third quarter. Browns Wide Receiver Jarvis Landry threw a touchdown to Mayfield for a two-point conversion. The Jets kicked a field goal in the third quarter and never scored again. Hyde rushed for another touchdown in the fourth quarter, finishing with 23 carries for 98 yards and two touchdowns. Mayfield completed 17/23 passes for 201 yards in his NFL debut and Landry led the Browns with 8 catches for 103 yards.
The Browns had gone 635 days without a victory, their last victory was on 12/24/2016. Christmas eve is right at three months away and it felt like Christmas to finally get a victory after going 0-16 last season. The Browns are now 1-1-1, one thing for sure they won’t go winless this year. Cleveland may have found their Quarterback of the future after so many tries. It’s only one game, but Mayfield looks like he has a promising NFL future.
