Working Woman Wednesday. Interview with Fashion Enthusiast and Business Owner of Fashion Unscripted.

Porsha Davis is from a small town called Ridgeway, South Carolina.  She moved to Atlanta 10+ years ago to pursue her career in fashion.  She obtained her AA in Fashion Merchandising as well as her BA and MBA.  She worked for a national published magazine for two years where she worked her way up to Creative Director.  Recently, she just started her own custom t-shirt line that she plans to expand in the future.

Tell readers about your Fashion Unscripted business and when did you start it?

Fashion Unscripted came from me using the name to describe my fashion.  I don’t follow the fashion rules I make my own.  I love everything about FASHION.  Yes, I check a lot of celebrities out because I love their styles, but I still do my own thing.  I wear what I think looks good on me.

What inspired you to get in the fashion industry?

I came from a background of women in my family who loved to shop and their appearance was important to them.  The woman in my family always like to look nice so of course it rubbed off on me.  My mom and aunt always made sure I was well kept in school.  My senior year I won best dressed and best looking.  That gave me a little more confidence than I already had.  Two years after high school I moved to Atlanta for fashion school and to take my fashion more serious.

What do you feel separate your clothes and products from others?

My t-shirt line is really personable to me.  It came from a negative place and time in my life.  The things I was feeling at the time instead of lashing out or doing something I would regret, I thought this would be a good way to express myself.  I’m putting my feelings on shirts I guess.  I’m turning a negative situation into a positive.  My shirts are positive, encouraging, and a little shade lol.

Are there any stores that sell your merchandise? If not, would you be open to the idea of having it sold at different stores?

No not yet, my business is fairly new.  I’m just starting out and I’m still putting the final touches on everything.  I will be open to the idea if it fits what I’m trying to do and where I’m trying to go with my brand.  If the pros outweigh the cons then of course.

What are the pros and cons of being a business owner?

Pros- You are your own boss so you don’t have to answer to anyone, no overhead cost, you can run your business how you see fit.
Cons- Long hours, more work, financial stress, and time consuming.

For a first-time buyer, what items would you recommend to purchase from your website?

Pick a shirt/design that fits your mood or personality.

Where would you like to see your business at in the next five years?

I want to add more designs to my shirts collection, more phrases as well, and expand to other items such as hats, handbags, jewelry, jackets, and many more.  Also, I want to eventually start hosting more women empowerment events across the United States for young girls and women as well.

How would you describe your personal style?

My personal style is streetwear chic.

What item in your closet do you wear the most?

Black leggings.  I have so many pair.  I can do a casual look or dress them up depending on the occasion.  They are my go to item.

What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

I’m a homebody and I’m shy.  I talk a lot if I know you, but if I don’t know you I won’t start a conversation.  However, I’m really nice and if you talk to me of course I will have a conversation with you.

What should every woman try at least once in her life?

Go to a women’s empowerment brunch or event.  You will get inspired and motivated to go after your dreams or just become a better version of yourself.
