Working Woman Wednesday. Interview With Owner of Simplistic BSC.

Sherrie Williams is the CEO and creator of Simplistic BSC, knows a thing or two about the process of healthy, natural hair and the struggles to not only accept one’s natural hair but celebrate it as well. Her mission is to provide a haircare line that makes the journey to healthy hair simple. Her products aren’t just for women. She has a men’s line and her products are also safe for children too.

What was your biggest fear when going out and starting your line?

I knew that I had a product that was needed but I was a little worried that it wouldn’t be received. Also, there’s always the fear that my products wouldn’t sell or that I wouldn’t get the attention of stores and vendors.  My clients discussed the need for easy-to-use natural hair products which is what also sparked my interest in creating products for natural hair and for those suffering from alopecia.

What current items are your best sellers?

Our best-selling items are the rice water shampoo and conditioner and our hair growth and thickening treatment.

What is the hardest part about growing your business?

Increasing the brand presence of my products.  We use social media and word of mouth has been a great marketing tool, but we definitely want to have more presence outside of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  Where I currently live there is a lot of competition for hair products, so it’s important to create stand-out marketing campaigns and initiatives, but that isn’t always the easiest thing to do.

As a business owner, what are your top three priorities?

My top three priorities are building a national and eventually international brand presence.  Supporting more women and children on their healthy hair journey through my hair care workshops.  Continuing to add products to my line that help make the journey to healthy hair easy.

Are there any stores that sell your products? If not, would you be open to the idea of having it sold at different retailers?

Our products are currently being sold at Milwaukee Area Technical College’s (MATC) cosmetology school.  Students also use them in their courses.  I am also open to having my products sold by different retailers including beauty schools, beauty supply stores and large retailers too.  In fact, that’s a goal of ours for 2021.

Lounge on the beach or by the pool all day?

Both! But if I had to choose, I would say lounge on the beach.

Are you scared of failure or criticism?

No, because there is a lesson behind both.  Even if the criticism isn’t the greatest or the failure creates a setback, there is still something to learn from both.  I have had my fair share of each and they have helped me become a better businesswoman, entrepreneur and cosmetologist.

If you were on death row, what would you want for your last meal?

Dressing, sweet potatoes, macaroni and cheese, potato salad, black eye peas and chocolate moist cake with water.

What’s a random hobby you’ve always wanted to try but never have?

Pole dancing.  I heard its great exercise, but it looks like a fun but challenging hobby.

What is something about life that people don’t appreciate as much as they should?

Life, that’s something people don’t appreciate and take for granted.  We never stop to think how it can be gone so quickly or how quickly you can lose the people around you. It is so important to value life and make the best of it each and every day.  Be thankful that you wake up every day and use your God-given talents to be the best version of yourself and to make the world around you better too.

What is one thing you were afraid to do, but felt amazing after you accomplished it?

Leaving my 9 to 5 and embarking on my entrepreneurial journey.  It’s scary to leave the stability of a bi-weekly paycheck and benefits to start a business.  I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to build the clientele or sell enough products to keep my dream going.  But here I am, years later, still doing what I love and helping people at the same time.  Every day isn’t the best, but I’m still so happy and thankful I made this decision.

How can everyone keep in contact with you on social media?

We’re on Facebook and Instagram at SimplisticBSC.
