Shout Out Sunday. Interview With R&B Soul Singer Keeyen Martin.

Despite the current state of the world, music has continued to flow from music savant Keeyen Martin’s pen into our hearts. In the past six months the artist has not only released three singles, but also two soulful visual accompaniments for his projects. His most showcase performance was also sponsored through the live virtual experience platform pioneered by rap star Offset, Axis Replay. A North Carolina native whose sound is said to be a perfect melodic blend of soul and R&B, Keeyen is no novice to the music industry. As a vocalist he has been performing and traveling with his talents since the age of three. Keeyen began his journey in Atlanta when he received the prestigious Michael Jackson Scholarship to attend Morehouse University.

Did you always know music was something you wanted to pursue?

Yes, I’ve known that music was my calling.  Since childhood, music has been a constant in my life.  From singing, rehearsing and performing my family has been rooted in music.

What is the most challenging part of making a song?

I think sometimes the hooks can be.  Mainly because I strive to think “less is more”.  You always want a simple, but catchy hook.  It’s very common to do multiple edits to get the hook just right.

How would you describe your musical style?

I would describe my musical style as Pop, Soul and Feel Good music.

Artist you would like to do a song with?

I would like to do a song with Missy Elliot, Jazmine Sullivan, H.E.R, 6lack, Charlie Puth, J. Cole, Drake, Kirk Franklin, Bruno Mars, Ty Dolla $ign, Babyface and so many more.

Any other upcoming projects you would like to share with readers?

My debut Ep “KM Vol. 1” is coming spring 2021 and many visual projects I’m excited to share soon.

Name one thing from your childhood that kids these days wouldn’t understand?

Kids probably wouldn’t understand using a house phone and pressing “flash to click over or use three way” and how to text without the letter keyboard.

If you could be great at one sport, which sport would you choose?

I would choose swimming.  It seems very intense, but fun at the same time.

You can only listen to one album for the rest of your life, what album is it?

Yikes that a hard one! If I could only listen to one album for the rest of my life I would have to choose like Motown’s greatest hits or something.  That way I could have a taste of all the classics.

Three things you have learned this year?

I’ve learned to be patient, present and enjoy the moment.

If you could have an hour lunch with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and what would you talk about?

I would like to have lunch with Bill Witherspoon or Bernie Mac.  I love to laugh and I know they would be a good time.  I’m sure we would talk about life, culture and how the entertainment industry has changed.

If you could go back to one historical event to witness it, what would it be and why?

I would be honored to go back and witness Martin Luther King “I have a Dream Speech”.  I just think that would be life changing to hear and view that in person.

How can everyone keep in contact with you on social media?

My social media is @keeyenmartin on all platforms.  Definitely would like to connect with everyone there.
