Working Woman Wednesday. Interview With Stationery Black Owner.

Kennedy Dumas founded Stationery Black LLC in April of 2018. Always having a passion for stationery and school supplies, she wanted to offer notebooks that showcased and inspired people of color. Stationery Black LLC offers illustrated notebooks that are inspired by people of color. In addition to illustrations, they also specialize in personalized notebooks.

What inspired you to start Stationery black?

My idea for Stationery Black came about in 2017, my 11th grade year of high school.  I have always been infatuated with pens, pencils, notebooks and especially agenda books. Although I had always been a lover of school supplies, I could never find any with characters who looked like me on them.  I wanted black ladies to feel represented on things that they loved.  For me, it was school supplies.

What was your biggest fear when going out and starting your own company?

Honestly I had one fear, which was people’s perception of me.  I didn’t want to seem like a beggar when I went up to people trying to sell a notebook.  I did not want people to judge me for hustling.  VERY quickly I got over that and soon, I had no fears.  I knew I had experience in selling and I knew I had a great product, so I hit the ground running.  I believe that mindset is what got my company up and running, because I wasn’t worrying about the negatives.  So many times, people are so worried about the “what ifs” that nothing ever comes from their plans or they are pushed far back.  Fear stifles growth.

What is unique about your notebooks?

My notebooks are unique, because they are all positive depictions of everyday activities and accomplishments brought about by black people.  People can literally see themselves in my notebooks, whether its a custom or an illustrative one.  My notebooks serve as affirmations and motivates people to become their best selves.  I believe if you constantly see and imagine positive things, that they will eventually come into fruition.

What are some of your goals for the future of Stationery black?

My short term company goals are to come out with Stationery Black notepads, drawing pads and agenda books. My long term goal is to make Stationery Black a school supplies company, with stores all around the world.

For a first-time buyer, what items would you recommend to purchase from your website?

I would say it depends on the buyer’s want.  If they want something personal for themselves or for a gift, I would recommend a custom notebook.  If they just want something creative and motivational, I would recommend an illustrative notebook.

What was one of the best days of your life?

One of the best days of my life was when my family brought me down to Jacksonville, Florida to check out the school.  During that weekend we went to the beach, restaurants, and just all had fun together.
