Working Woman Wednesday. Interview With Actress Kimberly Patterson from BET Family Business.

Before Kimberly became an actress, she pursued her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, with a minor in Human Resources, from the University of the West Indies, Mona.  She then became involved in the field of production and working behind the scenes as a Makeup Artist. With her training and education, along with her affable personality, she has kept a high editorial profile working with top production communities, celebrities and clients.  Not being a stranger to the life of production, she landed her first debut acting role as the lead actress in the feature film “King of the Dancehall” directed by Nick Cannon, who came to Jamaica seeking top talents to make his vision come to reality. Kimberly’s dynamic blend of talent, looks, experience and work ethic make her one of the most sought after young actresses in Jamaica.

What attracted you to begin a career as an actress?

My career as an actress began very spontaneously.  I was on a job as a key makeup artist when I was approached to audition for a film called “King of the Dancehall”.  I went to the audition with no acting background whatsoever.  I landed the role of the lead female actress alongside Nick Cannon, Busta Rhymes, Louis Gossett Jr., Whoopi Goldberg and the list goes on.  From then I have been honing my talent ever since.

Of all the roles you have played in the past, which is your favorite?

I love every role I’ve played thus far, because each character brings forth their own stories and challenges for me.

Tell readers about your role/character on BET The Family Business?

I play the character Ruby who is a young woman from Jamaica.  She found herself in an unforeseen circumstance where she had to step up to the plate for her family by signing up with an escorting agency.  With her first client being Orlando Duncan (the heir to the family’s car and drug business), she managed to steal his heart unexpectedly.  There will be many plot twists so watch out!

What is your dream role and what do you feel you would bring to it?

My dream role is a powerful female lead role for sure.  Whether it be action, drama, romance or thriller, as long as its powerful enough to possibly win an Oscar then that is it.  I am very passionate with everything I do, so I will definitely bring my A game to the project knowing that I will be doing this for not only myself, but for my fellow Jamaicans.

What is your profession’s greatest challenge today?

My greatest challenge today is balancing both my acting career and my makeup career.  I do book brides up to a year in advance, so hopefully there will be a way to work around that if my schedule should clash!

Tell readers about your Kimberly Patterson Makeup business and when did you start it?

I have been a makeup artist for eight years and counting.  My focus is on the bridal industry, personal clients and film.  I’ve gotten the opportunity to work as key makeup artist and assistant makeup artist on America’s Next Top Model, various feature length films.  As well as with top local and international celebrities including Usain Bolt, Damian Marley, Lil Yachty, Beyonce, Jay-Z, Cardi B, etc.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I never found myself fitting in with a regular corporate 9 to 5 job.  Being a free spirited person I knew it was my calling to be my own boss in whatever I chose to do.  After getting my degree at the University of the West Indies, I chose to work for someone for no more than five years.  That’s exactly what had happened, before I transitioned into my makeup career and eventually my acting career.
