What inspired you to write your first book?

I was inspired to write Simple Methods Smarter Decisions: A Safety Resource for Female Recording Artists after watching successful artists share their stories and experiences within the music industry – the trauma and fear along the way of their journey.  What also inspired me to write this book was the lack of available information and knowledge sharing available to girls, young ladies and women who are maneuvering the male dominated music industry.  I decided I wanted to change that, so I started writing!

How did it feel to become a published author?

It felt surreal to be a published author.  What is even more amazing is the book is available in three forms, not just one.  The book can be found as an eBook, audio book and paperback.  Writing books is a new passion for me.  I have a lot to say, a lot to share and a lot of books inside me waiting to enter this world.  This is just the beginning of my writing journey.

What do you hope readers will take away from this story?

I hope readers will take away the importance of sharing their story.  I hope readers will be encouraged to share their lessons learned in their life and career along the way of their journey.  There are others who are eager to learn from you, we need what you have, people will listen.  My desire is that the reader takes away valuable points and information she can keep with her along her journey, to help keep her safe, to keep her strong, motivated and focused on her gifted musical mission.

Which chapter in the book is your favorite and why?

My favorite chapter in the book is the “Ugly Truth…The Male Group”.  The chapter explores and discusses a topic rarely mentioned or discussed within the music industry, because of this women in music are often oblivious to it until it happens to them directly.  The chapter reads similar to a novel, it’s very interesting, engaging and it really draws in the reader.  Most of the funniest feedback I have received at this point has been related to this chapter. 

What is your musical background? 

I am a trained professional vocalist and songwriter.  Started singing at the age of three and have not stopped since.  I sing because music is truly my medicine.  I hope my gift and desire to share inspires others to live a purpose-filled life, because that is my mission for my gift.  Over the years, I have released multiple musical projects and was featured on Essence.com, which was a dream come true.  Music is truly medicine for me and I hope my gift inspired others to live their purpose-filled life as well.

What smell brings back great memories?

The smell of a clean house, it makes me feel safe and loved.  It reminds me of my mother and how the comfort and well-being of her family is always a priority for her. 

What are the top three places you need to see before you die?

This question filled my soul, because traveling is one of my favorite things to do.  Grand Cayman, it is so beautiful it’s where I would love to retire.  Netherlands, I love the beautiful rich culture and architecture of this region of the world.  New York City, I am a New Yorker at heart! I love the diversity, mix of cultures and free expression you encounter in the streets.

If you could meet any figure from history who would it be?

As a singer, I often think about the idea of floating in the clouds and singing alongside Whitney Houston, Tina Marie, Luther Vandross and Tupac.  These are individuals I would love to share a musical experience with.  I would also like to meet my ancestors.  I am curious about those who sacrificed their lives for me to be here today.  I want to know what they looked like, their unique characteristics and personalities.

If God grants you three wishes, what would you ask for?

Even though my life is not considered perfect.  I wouldn’t ask for anything, instead I would say thank you! I’m going to share with you why I have everything that I need.  I am in a very peaceful place in my life and excited about the journey of my life and all that comes with it.  I want to experience and earn everything along the way on this rollercoaster.  God has protected me along the way beyond belief, my life could have been very different on many occasions.  God has already blessed me with a rare gift.

What is something you think everyone should do at least once in their lives?

Travel alone! Many people do not know what they are missing, it is so amazing to travel alone.  So many people do not do this, much less leave or go anywhere far from their home.  Traveling the world will change you, it will expand your mind and knowledge.  Take advantage of the opportunity to travel the world.  Get that passport and go.
