Tell readers about your Sweets by Shanice and when did you start it?
I started Sweets by Shanice in 2016 and I wasn’t planning to turn it into a full-time business at all at that time. I honestly just enjoyed baking, I remember posting a few cakes that I made for Thanksgiving that year on Facebook and people started to ask if I would make a cake for them too. That’s basically how it all started.
What is your favorite food to bake?
Pound cakes. The first cake I ever made was a buttermilk pound cake for Thanksgiving when I was about 16 years old. My grandmother was in the kitchen cooking and she called me in to help. She walked me through it step by step and made me write down the recipe. I still have it today!
What are three tips for running a successful bakery?
Having a good support system, I think this goes for running any business. Good customer service and staying creative
What does your business do to keep your menu new and exciting?
I love to test out recipes. I can’t do it too often, because I never want cake to go to waste, LOL. I honestly just try to think outside of the box and I also realize that everyone’s taste buds are different. For instance, I’m not a fan of banana pudding but it’s my husband’s absolute favorite dessert and I make it just for him.

What do you want your supporters to know about you?
That I’m so appreciative! With everything that has happened this year, I am just grateful for my supportive and loyal customers/clients. Without them we would not have made it through this pandemic. We are truly blessed.
Describe your food in three words?
Decadent, creative and delightful.
What’s something you’ve always wanted to try?
French pastries. I told my husband that one day we’re going to take a year off and travel to France just to learn everything we can about French pastries. I still haven’t sold him on it yet, but I’m working on it.

What’s your guilty pleasure snack, drink, or junk food?
I love a good cookie, it can be any flavor. Oatmeal, chocolate chip, peanut butter, I love it all.
Who is on the guest list for your ideal dinner party?
My ideal dinner party would be close family and friends. I’m most happy when I’m surrounded by the ones I love most, so whenever I’m surrounded by family and friends I know that I’m going to have a good time.
What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
Most of my family and friends know this, but as far as the baking community I’m pretty sure that they would be shocked to know that I’m a singer. I grew up singing in church in the choir and I can still belt out a tune now and then.
What are the top three places you need to see before you die?
Paris, Greece and Italy.

What must be seen or experienced in person to really appreciate it?
Beyonce, LOL. Seriously though! I’ve seen Beyonce live about 4 or 5 times and each time I’m absolutely amazed. It’s nothing like being there live and in person. I would say that goes for any concert. I love music, so to experience music live is one thing. I would suggest everyone to do at least once in their life.
How can everyone keep in contact with you on social media?
You can find me on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest as @sweetsbyshanicellc.
