Tell readers about your Hudson Newkirk business and when did you start it?

HUDSON|NEWKIRK is a lingerie boutique created to make women of all shapes and sizes feel glamorous.  Named after two very glamorous and intelligent women; my maternal great grandmother and paternal grandmother.  I didn’t have the pleasure of knowing either of them, as my great grandmother died when I was three years old and my grandmother died before I was born.  However, from the stories I have been told about both of them, they were amazing in their own right.  So their last names are so fitting for my company as a reflection of who I am.  I started my business in January of this year.  I officially launched it on January 31, 2020.  I am determined to make it a success this year and for many years to come.

What inspired you to start your lingerie business?

I love building great businesses.  The idea that something I created can make women feel good within and look fabulous at the same time, makes my heart smile.  There’s nothing like having a long day and when you’re home you finally have that moment of relaxation.  After a calming hot bath or shower and putting on your favorite piece of lingerie.  It just feels good!

What are the pros and cons of being a business owner?

Cons: Making hard decisions such as having to fire someone.  Sometimes friends and family want to work for you and if they’re not a good fit, you have to be the one to tell them.  Taking a financial risk, not everyone is willing to take the leap.

Pros: Having autonomy; no one can hold you back on your decision-making.  It’s also job security in being your own boss.  Being able to pursue what you’re passionate about and of course more income potential.

What advice would you give to anyone who is thinking of owning their own business?

Don’t procrastinate, do your research and go for it.

What do you want your supporters to know about you?

I’m an overcomer.  I’m someone from a small town in North Carolina who went from being homeless living in a shelter for battered women.  To having a corporate career earning a lucrative salary, to becoming a business owner.  I will never forget where I came from.

What is that one thing that you never get bored of doing?

Traveling new exotic places.

What are you doing to overcome your struggles?

I continue to practice a daily positive mindset with everything in my life.  I speak, think and live positivity.  We all have control of our thoughts, so whatever your focus is you will become.

What must be seen or experienced in person to really appreciate it?

Spending time with family, it’s simply priceless.  Being able to touch them and laugh with them means so much to me.

Is there something you have dreamed of doing for a long time, if so why haven’t you?

Traveling to Africa, I’m going next year for my birthday!

What are the three most interesting things about you?

I understand how precious time is.  It’s priceless, so spend it wisely with the right people.  Losing both of my parents three months apart a couple of years ago truly put this in perspective for me.  Treat time like a resource to be invested in very carefully.  I am a giver.  If you’re someone I care about I’m all-in, team whoever you are fully.  I believe in myself.  Once I set my sight on something I begin to make moves to make it happen.  I truly manifest the things I want by believing in their existence.
