Phil Michael is a licensed barber in the states of Pennsylvania, Delaware and Florida.  He is from Wildwood, New Jersey.  The former owner of The Hair Studio, Laurel Springs, New Jersey and now the co-owner of the Modern Styles Barber Lounge in the Greater Orlando area.  Phil is a multiple award winner barber educator and a true master barber.

When did you decide you wanted to start a barbershop?

I made the decision to become a shop owner in 2013 when I was fired from a barbershop.  From that day forward, I choice to never allow someone to have authority over my job security

What would you say was the key to your success or what about your particular style made folks gravitate toward you?

The keys towards my success had everything to do with my faith and confidence.  My style is different.  I’ve heard clients gravitate towards me, because I am professional

What Separates You from Everyone Else?

What separates me from everyone else are the detail style of cutting and personality.

How has technology helped you/ hurt you in this business?

Technology has helped me in business.  I am able to reach more people without having to be physically present.  But in the business nothing beats word or mouth.

What qualities do you look for in other barbers that might be cutting your hair?

Any barber that cuts my hair, must pay close attention to details.

What do you enjoy most about the barber culture?

What I enjoy most about the barber culture is the entrepreneurship and the creativity that has been on the rise.

What’s your best childhood memory?

When my mother owned a beauty supply store in Pleasantville, NJ and give me my first pair of clippers.

If you could meet any historical figure, who would you choose and why?

If I could meet an historical figure it would be Malcolm X.  I would want to meet Malcolm to learn the truth.

What did you always wanted to try but never found the courage to do?

I’ve done and I’m in the process of doing everything I wanted.

What are the three most interesting things about you?

I am ambidextrous, published magazine model, self taught barber and photographer.
